About Us
Machu Picchu is a highlight of visiting Peru in South America. It’s a sight to behold standing above this ancient city that was built on the top of a mountain. But seeing the sites is not the best thing about traveling. How many times have you visited a place and it’s the people that make it so special and memorable?
Restorative Vacations planned a retreat for 17 people to Peru from Hope Interfaith Center. It was a mix of all ages, couples and singles all traveling together with a shared desire to have an experience in a new place, learn from the local culture and see some inspiring sites.
As I planned this pilgrimage, I enhanced the experience by creating opportunities to connect with the land in Peru, with the deep-rooted culture and with our selves. While staying at the base of the mountain below the magnificent Machu Picchu, we awoke early before sunrise. We ascended to the entrance of Machu Picchu, were a local Shaman met us to lead us through a meaningful spiritual encounter on Machu Picchu.
Our experience entailed a hike up the mountain to the perfect spot to connect with the sunrise and the mountains. We encountered some challenging pathways and steps. What inspired us all was the way we came together as a group to support each other on our hike. No one wanted to miss out and no one wanted to leave anyone behind. We gave a hand to one another and offered words of encouragement. We were challenged and we overcame together.
Once we reached a lush grassy hillside with llamas grazing, we stood tall facing the mountain just in time to witness the most glorious sunrise coming over the mountains before us. Lead by the Shaman, we released any negative memories and thoughts into Mother Earth and just let it go. When Father Sky beamed over the mountain peak, we allowed the warm rays of sunlight to fill our body and soul with all the love and gratitude we could hold.
The awe-inspiring natural beauty before us and the connection to ourselves as we bathed in the sunlight was unforgettable, but the community we created through our travels together and the support of one another was the ultimate gift.
